A Practical Guide to Changing Your Home.

It's easy to get caught up in needing change in our personal and professional lives. Our homes are no exception. The next question I pose is, how much do you really need to do? This practical guide outlines effective ways to inject new life into your space and changing your home, without sacrificing its soul.

First things first, how many items do you currently treasure? Take inventory of how many items you have thoughtfully curated, collected, or cared for. These items are a reflection of you and should be present in your space to enjoy. Analyze the color scheme - do you see a connection between these peices? Analyze the scale - should they be stand alone pieces or would they be grouped together with other items? Analyze placement in room - should they be a focal point or on a less-dominant wall for personal enjoyment?

Next, determine what no longer serves you and your space. If items are abused and/or never used, it's time to take them out of your space. If you have outgrown your shelves and items are living on the floor, it's time to prioritize upgrading your storage solution. If you have heirlooms that are taking up space and don't hold sentiment to you, it's time to gift to someone else in your family to enjoy the keepsake or move to the attic for safekeeping to pass to the next generation if you can't bare to part with it.

Now, look at your room from a functional stand-point. Moving funriture to a different room or changing a room's function often creates a completely different aesthetic without having to spend a dime. This approach can be a grand gesture, like switching your Dining and Living Room to increase use of a space. Or it could something as simple as trading out chairs or tables that help add some new personality to the space.

Finally, decide if you can and want to invest in new pieces to support a new color scheme or look. These should not be radical changes, rather an opportunity to redefine what currently appeals to you and stays in harmony with your curated aesthetic. Often times, this step includes updating soft furnishings, like: pillows, curtains, and rugs. These items are more of a finishing touch to polish off the total look, while also being the easiest to change without breaking the bank.

Remember, it's okay that your home doesn't look like all the homes on instagram, pinterest, or media. Your home should be an evoluation of YOUR life. That means investing in high-quality or sentimental pieces and then finding ways to reinvent them to stay relevant.
